Parents (Calderdale)

It can be a scary and lonely time when your child comes out as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Trans (LGBT) and we have collected some advice from the parents that we have supported in the past.

Ways to support your Trans child

Children and young people that are coming out as trans or are unsure whether they’re trans may need additional support from you, the parents / carers, with regards to specific support about gender identity. It can be difficult to know how best to support your child, so here’s a PDF document of advice on how to best support and validate a transgender or questioning child:

Ways to support your Trans child

Support for parents/carers/guardians of Trans young people

It became clear that parents/carers/guardians of trans young people have a particular need for a safe and nurturing space to meet and share their experiences and knowledge.

We run a monthly peer support group for parents/carers/guardians of Trans young people where young people and parents can attend together.

The group meets on a monthly basis in Huddersfield Town Centre on the first Thursday of everything month. Contact the Youth Service Manager here for further information:

The Brunswick Centre Trans Youth Group

Parents have a separate space from young people to be able to meet other parents in similar situations, share experiences and form friendships – all in a confidential space where parents/carers/guardians won’t be judged.
